Project Overview
The Reconnaissance Study was completed in August of 2018. The study involved inventorying and assessing the conditions of traffic signals and street lights located within the downtown Anchorage project area. Lighting systems were evaluated to determine if they meet current standards. Deficiencies that were found include:
- Significant corrosion of pole base plates and anchor bolts (particularly along 4th Avenue)
- Poor bonding/grounding
- Electrical components too old to maintain or repair from unavailability of replacement parts
- Lighting levels fail to meet current standards in about half of the project area
To correct these deficiencies, the study recommended lighting and signalization improvements throughout the project area. The upgrades and improvements will be separated into smaller phased projects and combined with other infrastructure improvements when feasible. The scope and limits of the projects will be determined as funding becomes available.
